The Basics

What is CPO certification?
+

CPO® (Certified Pool Operator) is the industry-standard credential issued by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) for professional pool and spa operators.

It is legally required in 26+ states and widely mandated by hotels, apartment complexes, waterparks, fitness centers, schools, and municipal facilities. Certification covers water chemistry, filtration, equipment operation, safety, and regulatory compliance — everything needed to legally and safely operate a commercial aquatic facility.

The CPO® designation is recognized across the United States and in 40+ countries, making it the most portable and universally accepted pool operator credential available.

How much does CPO certification cost?
+

CPO certification with The Pool Trainers costs $475 per student for scheduled group classes. Groups of 4 or more pay $450 per person.

How long does CPO certification take?
+

CPO certification requires approximately 16 hours of total study and instruction:

PhaseFormatTime
Pool Operator Primer (POP)Self-paced online, before class~8 hours
Day 1 — Live ZoomWater chemistry, treatment4 hours
Day 2 — Live ZoomEquipment, operations, safety4 hours
ExamWritten, after Day 2~1 hour

Both class days run live via Zoom. Imperial-track classes run Day 1: 9am–1pm ET, Day 2: 9am–2pm ET. Metric-track (international) classes run Day 1: 2pm–6pm ET.

Is CPO certification available online?
+

Yes. All scheduled classes with The Pool Trainers are conducted live via Zoom — two days, four hours per day. You attend in real time with a live instructor, ask questions, and interact with classmates from wherever you are.

This is not a self-paced video course. There is no prerecorded lecture to click through. You get direct instruction from a PHTA-certified expert with 30+ years of aquatic experience, which substantially improves exam readiness and on-the-job application.

Students from across the U.S. and internationally have attended via Zoom. Metric-system sessions are available for international participants in April and May.

Requirements & Regulations

What states require CPO certification?
+

26+ U.S. states legally require CPO certification for commercial pool and spa operators. Requirements vary by state and facility type.

States with strong CPO mandates include Florida, California, Texas, New York, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, and many others. Hotels, apartment complexes, waterparks, schools, fitness facilities, and municipal pools are most commonly covered.

Even in states without a statewide mandate, local health codes and insurance carriers frequently require CPO certification for facility operators. If you operate or manage a commercial aquatic facility, CPO certification is almost always either required or strongly recommended.

Check your state health department for the specific requirement at your facility type. When in doubt, getting certified is the right call — it protects your facility, your guests, and your liability exposure.

What is the difference between CPO and AFO certification?
+

CPO® (Certified Pool Operator) and AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) are both nationally recognized pool operator credentials — but from different organizations with different audiences.

CredentialIssuerBest For
CPO®PHTA (Pool & Hot Tub Alliance)Hotels, fitness centers, commercial pools, international use
AFONRPA (National Recreation & Park Assoc.)Municipal parks, recreational facilities

CPO is the most widely accepted standard in the U.S. — accepted across all 50 states and in 40+ countries. AFO is more specific to the park and recreation sector. Many jurisdictions accept either credential; check your local requirements to confirm which applies to your facility.

If you work in a hotel, apartment complex, gym, waterpark, or private club, CPO is the standard you need.

What is the POP (Pool Operator Primer)?
+

The Pool Operator Primer (POP) is the official PHTA online prerequisite for CPO certification. It is self-paced and typically takes 6–8 hours to complete.

You work through POP before your scheduled class dates — it covers foundational concepts in pool chemistry, equipment, and operations so that live instruction on Days 1 and 2 can go deeper rather than starting from zero. Think of it as the textbook reading before the lecture.

Access to POP is included in your enrollment fee. You'll receive login credentials after registration so you can start immediately, even before your handbook arrives.

How does the CPO handbook work?
+

The official PHTA CPO Handbook is a comprehensive reference that covers all exam content — water chemistry, filtration, equipment, safety, and regulations. It is the primary study material for the course.

When you enroll, a physical handbook is shipped to your mailing address (allow 1–2 weeks for delivery). You also receive immediate access to the eBook version so you can begin studying right away while the print copy is in transit.

The handbook is yours to keep permanently — it serves as an ongoing field reference long after you're certified. Spanish, French, and Russian editions are available for international students. Select your language preference during enrollment.

What happens if I don't pass the CPO exam?
+

If you don't pass the CPO exam on your first attempt, you can retake the full 2-day live instruction sessions at no additional charge. There is a nominal exam re-administration fee charged by PHTA for the exam itself, but the course days are free to repeat.

In practice, the vast majority of students pass on the first try. Our live instruction format — with real-time Q&A from an experienced instructor — substantially improves exam readiness compared to self-paced video courses.

If you attend class, complete the POP, and engage with the material, you will be prepared for the exam. See upcoming class dates.

Instructor & International

Who is the CPO instructor?
+

Our instructor brings 30+ years of experience in aquatic safety, pool operations, and professional instruction. He is a PHTA-certified CPO instructor with a track record that spans community pools to international competition venues.

He served on coaching staff at the 2000 Sydney Games and is the official announcer for ISCA (International Swimming Coaches Association) championships — a role that has taken him to swim meets and aquatic events across 40+ countries.

His teaching style is direct, practical, and exam-focused. Students consistently cite his ability to explain water chemistry concepts clearly as the reason they passed with confidence. Read what they say on the homepage.

Can I get CPO certified internationally?
+

Yes. The Pool Trainers offers metric-system CPO classes specifically designed for international students and facilities that operate in metric units. Metric classes are available in April and May.

The live Zoom format means location is no barrier — you attend from wherever you are in the world. Students from 40+ countries have completed training with us. The PHTA CPO credential is recognized internationally in more than 40 countries.

Handbooks, exams, and study materials are available in Spanish, French, and Russian in addition to English. Select your language and measurement system during enrollment.

Renewal & Validity

How long is CPO certification valid?
+

CPO certification is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. It is nationally recognized across the United States and accepted in 40+ countries.

Your certificate lists your expiration date. When it approaches, you complete a CPO recertification course — a shorter refresher program, not the full initial course — to renew for another 5-year cycle.

The Pool Trainers offers CPO recertification for $375. See recertification options on the enrollment page.

How do I renew my CPO certification?
+

CPO renewal is called recertification. You complete a CPO recertification course from a PHTA-approved provider before your 5-year expiration date.

Recertification is shorter than the initial course — it focuses on regulatory updates and refreshing core concepts rather than covering everything from scratch. The Pool Trainers offers live Zoom recertification for $375.

If your certification has recently lapsed, you can typically still recertify without retaking the full initial course, depending on how long it has been expired. Contact us via the enrollment page to confirm your options based on your expiration date.
