Both class days run live via Zoom. Imperial-track classes run Day 1: 9am–1pm ET, Day 2: 9am–2pm ET. Metric-track (international) classes run Day 1: 2pm–6pm ET.

Yes. All scheduled classes with The Pool Trainers are conducted live via Zoom — two days, four hours per day. You attend in real time with a live instructor, ask questions, and interact with classmates from wherever you are.

This is not a self-paced video course. There is no prerecorded lecture to click through. You get direct instruction from a PHTA-certified expert with 30+ years of aquatic experience, which substantially improves exam readiness and on-the-job application.

Students from across the U.S. and internationally have attended via Zoom. Metric-system sessions are available for international participants in April and May.

26+ U.S. states legally require CPO certification for commercial pool and spa operators. Requirements vary by state and facility type.

States with strong CPO mandates include Florida, California, Texas, New York, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, and many others. Hotels, apartment complexes, waterparks, schools, fitness facilities, and municipal pools are most commonly covered.

Even in states without a statewide mandate, local health codes and insurance carriers frequently require CPO certification for facility operators. If you operate or manage a commercial aquatic facility, CPO certification is almost always either required or strongly recommended.

CPO® (Certified Pool Operator) and AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) are both nationally recognized pool operator credentials — but from different organizations with different audiences.

CPO is the most widely accepted standard in the U.S. — accepted across all 50 states and in 40+ countries. AFO is more specific to the park and recreation sector. Many jurisdictions accept either credential; check your local requirements to confirm which applies to your facility.

The optional Pool Math Workbook ($25) is available as an add-on and covers approximately 20% of exam questions. Optional, but recommended.

The Pool Operator Primer (POP) is the official PHTA online prerequisite for CPO certification. It is self-paced and typically takes 6–8 hours to complete.

You work through POP before your scheduled class dates — it covers foundational concepts in pool chemistry, equipment, and operations so that live instruction on Days 1 and 2 can go deeper rather than starting from zero. Think of it as the textbook reading before the lecture.

Access to POP is included in your enrollment fee. You'll receive login credentials after registration so you can start immediately, even before your handbook arrives.

The official PHTA CPO Handbook is a comprehensive reference that covers all exam content — water chemistry, filtration, equipment, safety, and regulations. It is the primary study material for the course.

When you enroll, a physical handbook is shipped to your mailing address (allow 1–2 weeks for delivery). You also receive immediate access to the eBook version so you can begin studying right away while the print copy is in transit.

The handbook is yours to keep permanently — it serves as an ongoing field reference long after you're certified. Spanish, French, and Russian editions are available for international students. Select your language preference during enrollment.

If you don't pass the CPO exam on your first attempt, you can retake the full 2-day live instruction sessions at no additional charge. There is a nominal exam re-administration fee charged by PHTA for the exam itself, but the course days are free to repeat.

Your certificate lists your expiration date. When it approaches, you complete a CPO recertification course — a shorter refresher program, not the full initial course — to renew for another 5-year cycle.

Recertification is shorter than the initial course — it focuses on regulatory updates and refreshing core concepts rather than covering everything from scratch. The Pool Trainers offers live Zoom recertification for $375.
