Storage Is Part of Water Safety
Chemicals can be effective in the pool and dangerous in the storage room. Keep each product in its original, labeled container and follow the safety data sheet and product label. Never transfer a chemical into an unmarked bottle or assume that two products are compatible because they look similar.
Separate Incompatibles
Store acids away from chlorine products, protect containers from heat and direct sunlight, and keep products dry. Do not stack containers where a leak can reach another chemical. Ventilation should move contaminated air away from people without spreading fumes into occupied spaces.
- Keep aisles, eyewash stations, shutoffs, and exits unobstructed.
- Use the personal protective equipment specified by the label and safety data sheet.
- Inspect containers, caps, tubing, and secondary containment on a scheduled basis.
- Limit access to trained staff and keep an up-to-date inventory.
Plan for a Spill Before One Happens
Staff should know when to evacuate, whom to call, and where emergency equipment is located. Never mix chemicals to clean a spill and never enter a contaminated room without the required training and protection. Record the incident, secure the area, and follow the product's emergency guidance and local reporting requirements.
