What Turnover Means

Turnover time is the time required for the circulation system to move a volume of water equal to the pool's volume. The basic relationship is simple: turnover time equals pool volume divided by flow rate. The result is only meaningful when both inputs are accurate and the water is actually circulating through the treatment equipment.

Verify the Inputs

Confirm the pool volume from reliable plans or measurements, not a guess copied from an old label. Measure flow with the facility's flow meter or another approved method, and record the reading at normal operating conditions. A pump nameplate does not prove the flow reaching the pool.

Flow Supports, But Does Not Replace, Testing

A pool can meet a turnover target and still have poor chemistry if the system is misapplied, poorly mixed, or underfed. Pair flow checks with sanitizer and pH testing, filter inspections, and observations of dead spots or weak returns. Trend the readings so a gradual loss of flow gets attention before water quality changes.

When you change a pump speed, valve, filter, or fitting, recalculate and document the operating condition. Numbers matter most when they describe the system that swimmers are actually using.
